JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – INNOVATIVE South African companies with an ability to make use of evolving technology to improve customer value, operational procedures and create new revenue streams have been rewarded in Johannesburg.

The winners have been announced at the Innovation Index at the Accenture Innovation Conference, following weeks of adjudication by Accenture and The Da Vinci Institute.

JOHANNESBURG; [Oct.] 12, 2016 – Following weeks of adjudication, Accenture (NYSE: ACN) and The Da Vinci Institute announced winners of this year’s Innovation Index at the Accenture Innovation Conference held in Johannesburg today. The awards ceremony honoured businesses – regardless of their sizes – for spearheading innovation in their own industries.

Accenture (NYSE: ACN) and an expert panel led by Accenture Innovation Index partners – including The Da Vinci Institute, TransUnion and other innovation practitioners – have selected the finalists of this year’s Accenture Innovation Index. The winners, to be selected from among 20 finalists across five categories, will be announced at the Accenture Innovation Conference on 12 October in Johannesburg.

The vast continent of Africa has a complex relationship with electricity. In some countries, like South Africa, demand exceeds the available supply. In others, such as Niger, only 1 in 7 people have access to it at all. Regardless of which end of the scale they’re on, every African electricity provider faces the same challenge – how to build and maintain the infrastructure needed to secure a reliable, low-cost electricity supply for all. This week, I had the privilege of speaking to two young entrepreneurs whose inventions are tackling that very big issue.

The finalists from Cameroon‚ Kenya‚ South Africa and Uganda were chosen for their ability to apply engineering to solve problems for people across the continent‚ according to a statement by the UK Royal Academy of Engineering.

In Cameroon, where there are roughly 50 cardiologists for 22 million citizens, Arthur Zang combined medical diagnostics with customised software and hardware to change the way rural Africans access heart doctors.

A dozen entrepreneurs shortlisted for the 2nd Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation have ideas to improve food security, health care and energy access.

The Africa Prize is run by the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK. The 2016 shortlist is undergoing business training to turn engineers into entrepreneurs before the winner is announced in Tanzania in May.
