These Young Inventors Are Tackling Africa's Electricity Crisis

The vast continent of Africa has a complex relationship with electricity. In some countries, like South Africa, demand exceeds the available supply. In others, such as Niger, only 1 in 7 people have access to it at all. Regardless of which end of the scale they’re on, every African electricity provider faces the same challenge – how to build and maintain the infrastructure needed to secure a reliable, low-cost electricity supply for all. This week, I had the privilege of speaking to two young entrepreneurs whose inventions are tackling that very big issue. Both were finalists in the 2016 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, founded by the Royal Academy of Engineering; an award that celebrates engineers who have developed innovations that will benefit Africans...
